Medical Education
Graduate Medical Education Department
Ohio Valley Medical Center’s Residency Programs and Medical Education Department utilize a community-based hospital as its source of teaching. OVMC is a 200-bed hospital located in the industrialized upper Ohio Valley and heart of downtown Wheeling. OVMC attracts patients of all socioeconomic classes and age groups. We serve as a tertiary care center for many nearby rural hospitals. This diversity provides an excellent source for medical training. Our faculty and volunteer teaching Attendings maintain an evidenced-based, clinically oriented, hand on approach to medical training. OVMC has been involved with medical education for over 60 years. The hospital has been aggressive in training physicians, medical students, nurses, LPNs, radiology techs, physical therapists and respiratory therapists either through it’s own programs or in conjunction with local colleges and universities. Our physicians, nurses and administration are committed to providing an excellent environment for learning.
The West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM) educates primary care osteopathic physicians for rural communities. The school is dedicated, first and foremost, to service for West Virginia and prepares graduates to care for the special health care needs of West Virginia’s elderly.
Mountain State Osteopathic Postdoctoral Training Institutions, Inc. (MSOPTI) or Mountain State OPTI was accredited by the American Osteopathic Association in June, 1999. The consortium is comprised of a central member, the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, located in Lewisburg, West Virginia, and its partner hospitals. While varied in size and scope, each MSOPTI partner hospital offers unique training opportunities for both pre and postdoctoral trainees. At the present time, all MSOPTI partner hospitals offer traditional osteopathic internship programs, most offer osteopathic family practice residency programs, and one offers an osteopathic emergency medicine residency and an osteopathic internal medicine residency program with an internal medicine track internship. The consortium aims to establish additional primary care residencies and to expand the consortium by exploring potential new training sites.
